How long do we hold on to clothing in our closets ?
July 06, 2023
I often wonder how often a woman should go through her closet and bid farewell to some of her beloved pieces. Cleaning out your clothing closet though, is something I think most people dread. Trying to decide what stays and what goes can be daunting and very overwhelming. Maybe it’s easier if we look at it as a maintenance of our clothing. Let’s talk about a crucial aspect of maintaining a fabulous wardrobe: the regular closet cleanse! Well, my answer isn't set in stone, but I'll share some helpful guidelines to keep your wardrobe sleek and up-to-date.
1️⃣ Seasonal Switch-Up: First and foremost, it's essential to perform a closet evaluation every time the seasons change. As the weather shifts, so does our clothing needs. Take this opportunity to assess your wardrobe and determine which items will serve you well in the upcoming season. Bid adieu to pieces that no longer resonate with your personal style or are worn out beyond repair.
2️⃣ Six-Month Rule: Another popular approach is to conduct a closet purge every six months. This timeframe ensures that you stay on top of any style fluctuations, lifestyle changes, or weight fluctuations that may affect your clothing choices. It's a chance to reevaluate your fashion preferences and make room for new treasures.
3️⃣ One-In, One-Out: A fantastic rule of thumb is to adopt a "one-in, one-out" policy. For every new piece you add to your wardrobe, consider parting ways with an existing item. This practice helps you maintain a balanced and manageable collection, preventing your closet from overflowing with unused or forgotten clothes.
4️⃣ Occasional Mini Purges: In addition to the more structured approaches, consider mini purges periodically throughout the year. These mini purges can be triggered by various events, such as when you notice items you haven't worn in ages, when you discover duplicates or similar styles, or when you simply feel the need for a fresh start. Don't underestimate the impact of these small decluttering sessions!
5️⃣ The Feel-Good Rule: Lastly, listen to your intuition and pay attention to how your clothes make you feel. If you put on a garment and it no longer sparks joy or confidence within you, it's a clear sign that it's time to bid it farewell. Surrounding yourself with pieces that make you feel amazing will boost your self-esteem and ensure that you always step out in style.
Remember, a curated and clutter-free closet allows you to easily find what you love, creates space for new fashion adventures, and ensures that you make the most of your existing wardrobe.
